Marine Services (formerly H.M. Calais & Sons) was established in 1969
by Harry, Henry and Philip Calais. The family has a history of boat
building due to Harry’s Indian Ocean descent, he came to England from
the Seychelles at the end of World War Two.
The business started out in Netley
where they built and repaired yachts and other small craft, due to
their growing reputation Thoresen, who were then running cross channel
services out of Southampton and Portsmouth, employed the company to
maintain their ships.
Although Harry passed away in 1997
the business has continued to grow and the introduction of a brother
in law, Ron Roberts as a director has maintained the strong family
traditions of the business. The three directors are all tradesmen in
their own right and their hands on approach to all the work they
undertake means that both the customer and those working for the
company benefit greatly from their skill and years of experience.
Since taking over from Townsend Thoresen in 1986 P&O (Porstmouth) Ltd
have retained Calais Marine as one
of their main contractors, and
they in turn are our biggest client.
The ability to respond quickly in
emergencies and to complete jobs under the tightest of time
constraints has set Calais Marine apart over the years, and with the
range of trades and skilled men at our disposal there is little we
cannot do. Although 90% of the work we undertake is for the marine
sector we are equally efficient at refitting shops, hotels,
restaurants or homes.
